Weoley Castle Subbuteo Club Members The club moved from the living rooms of Weoley Castle to its new home at Harborne Village Social Club for the clubs first open league day, with eight players competing under old school Subbuteo rules.

Adam Lundy, visiting from our friends at Worcester River Plate Severn Subbuteo Club, finished second in the league despite battling man-flu as well as his opponents, but couldn’t best league winner Simon McMurray in the final as McMurray, one of the original Weoley Castle League players from some 20 years ago, defeated Lundy 3-2 and ended the competition as unbeaten Champion!

Despite scoring 18 goals in open competition, Matthew Henry finished a close 3rd.

Thanks to everyone who attended. The Club now hopes to regularly hold events in 2014 and beyond in its new home, with the emphasis firmly on friendly competition and fun!

Subbuteo Urban Arena Night – 16.02.13

Subbuteo Urban Arena

Subbuteo Urban Arena from MB Games

Released by MB Games in 2006, Subbuteo Urban Arena is described as a “fast paced, 5-a-side football at its best. Customise your arena and show off with outrageous tricks using players from Europe’s finest clubs.”

Never one to miss out on football at its best, the Weoley Castle Subbuteo Club held a Urban Arena tournament on 16th February.

Adam and Owen with Subbuteo Urban Arena

Adam Washbrook and Owen Shelley

Sadly, unlike the Urban Arena boxed set which was a huge success (we’d imagine MB would argue) the Urban Arena tournament drew rather less interest – leaving the threesome of Adam Washbrook, Richard Tubb and Owen Shelley to battle it out.

Subbuteo Urban Arena

With an assortment of props on the five-a-side pitch, ranging from a Basketball Hoop to a Washing Machine – points were awarded not only for goals, but for artistic merit upon completing trick-shots Subbuteo Urban Arenaduring open play.

The results of the three matches, played at six minutes per half.

  • Richard Tubb 1 (1 goal, 0 artistic merit points) Adam Washbrook 4 (2 goals, 2 artistic merit points)
  • Owen Shelley 3 (3 goals, 0 artistic merit points) Adam Washbrook 7 (1 goal, 6 artistic merit points)
  • Owen Shelley 3 (1 goal, 2 artistic merit points) Richard Tubb 4 (2 goals, 2 artistic merit points)

Adam Washbrook therefore walked away as Weoley Castle Subbuteo Urban Arena Champion, and with some considerable flair – as you can see by the attached videos.

Shortly after the conclusion of play, the Committee voted to never hold an Urban Subbuteo Arena tournament again and to write a stern letter of complaint to MB for designing one of the worst Subbuteo variant games we’d ever come across. 🙂

In results from standard Subbuteo played that same evening, Owen Shelley ran amock, running rough-shod over Richard and Adam including a four-nil annihilation of Adam. Adam’s arguments to the Committee to be awarded points for artistic merit were sternly rebuked.

  • Owen Shelley 2 Richard Tubb 1
  • Adam Washbrook 0 Owen Shelley 0
  • Richard Tubb 1 Adam Washbrook 1
  • Owen Shelley 1 Richard Tubb 1

Paul Tubb with TrophyBedlam Wood was the setting for the latest  Weoley Castle Subbuteo Club meeting, with a renewed sense of anticipation that reigning champion Paul Tubb (pictured right) could be knocked off his throne!

The round-robin tournament ended with it’s tightest ever finish, three players in contention for the title as the last round of matches took place!

The AstroTurf at Bedlam Wood provided a different playing surface for everyone to adjust to, and there were some great matches – including Adam Washbrook scoring a winner in the last 90 seconds to defeat Owen Shelley 1-0, and some solid Goalkeeping from Richard Tubb as he held off a continued assault from Owen Shelley, with a goal in each half to win 2-0!

Here’s a short video of Arron almost scoring a long-shot against Adam!

Arron moves in for a long-shot against Adam!

Doubles Matches

Post-competition, three Doubles matches took place – played using Small Ball for fast paced matches!

In an ill-tempered clash that saw Arron Shelley shown a Yellow Card for his constantly arguments with referee Adam Washbrook, Owen Shelley and Richard Tubb scored two goals in the second half to come back from being 1-0 down at half time and beat Paul Tubb & Arron Shelley 2-1.

The Shelley Brothers then put on a superlative display of doubles talent, destroying Paul Tubb & Adam Washbrook 3-0 after leading 2-0 at Half-Time!

Finally, Adam Washbrook and Richard Tubb scored a goal in each half to win 2-0 against Owen Shelley and Paul Tubb!

After a three-way chase for the championship crown this meeting, there is a new sense of competition at the top of the table – who will be champion at the next meeting?
