Paul Tubb with TrophyBedlam Wood was the setting for the latest  Weoley Castle Subbuteo Club meeting, with a renewed sense of anticipation that reigning champion Paul Tubb (pictured right) could be knocked off his throne!

The round-robin tournament ended with it’s tightest ever finish, three players in contention for the title as the last round of matches took place!

The AstroTurf at Bedlam Wood provided a different playing surface for everyone to adjust to, and there were some great matches – including Adam Washbrook scoring a winner in the last 90 seconds to defeat Owen Shelley 1-0, and some solid Goalkeeping from Richard Tubb as he held off a continued assault from Owen Shelley, with a goal in each half to win 2-0!

Here’s a short video of Arron almost scoring a long-shot against Adam!

Doubles Matches

Post-competition, three Doubles matches took place – played using Small Ball for fast paced matches!

In an ill-tempered clash that saw Arron Shelley shown a Yellow Card for his constantly arguments with referee Adam Washbrook, Owen Shelley and Richard Tubb scored two goals in the second half to come back from being 1-0 down at half time and beat Paul Tubb & Arron Shelley 2-1.

The Shelley Brothers then put on a superlative display of doubles talent, destroying Paul Tubb & Adam Washbrook 3-0 after leading 2-0 at Half-Time!

Finally, Adam Washbrook and Richard Tubb scored a goal in each half to win 2-0 against Owen Shelley and Paul Tubb!

After a three-way chase for the championship crown this meeting, there is a new sense of competition at the top of the table – who will be champion at the next meeting?

Adam and Allan CookTSPA rules differ slightly to modern FISTF Subbuteo rules, but are very similar to the “old Subbuteo” rules the Weoley Castle Subbuteo Club play to. The veterans of the circuit were very patient in accommodating Owen, Adam and Richard as they made the adjustment though!

It was a great days playing in a venue kindly organised by Rob Paterson, and of the 12 players who played, 8 received 5 games and 4 received 6 games – all in great spirit.

The format was 3 groups of 4, with the top 2 qualifying to 2 further groups of 3, with the top 1 then qualifying to the final, the same format was used in the plate. Wins were awarded 2 points. A Draw 1 point.
